Organ transplant
Just finished a 3 hours lecture and today's topic is really interesting, so i wan to share with u guys out there regarding ORGAN TRANSPLANT
Here r some shocking local Malaysian statistics regarding organ donation in Msia.
-According to WHO 2010, there are only 0.6% per million ppl who donated organ. That means, if Msia has around 35 million population, every year only 17 chose to donate their organs to save other's ppl life! where are the rest??!!! , in fact Malaysian has one of the lowest donation rate in the world. This is truly shocking for me, for every hour, every minute, every second, there is a person(>1) who are dying and r in dire need to obtain an organ transplant to survive. Probably due to religious or cultural issues, malaysian r unwilling to donate their organ. However this is not an acceptable excuse, because millions of lives can be saved just by donating ur organ or ur blood. Y not choose to do a good deed after u r dead?? Oh ya if u still can not make any decision to donate ur organ yet, at least try to donate ur blood every 3 months, ( in this case, i dun mean the girls' monthly donation haha >.<) btw i just donated my blood few days ago =D
So if u wan to donate, wad organs can u choose to donate?
Okay first, there are 2 type of donation, living donor and cadaveric( after u die) donor
As a living donor, u can donate
1. Liver ( dun worry, just merely 30% of ur liver is sufficient to function as 1 and it can easily regenerate)
2. Kidney ( u just need 1 kidney to survive ;) , donate another one )
Cadaveric donor (anything except brain for now)
1. Heart
2. Lungs
3. Cornea
4. Limbs
5.Pancreas
6. Skin
7. Small intestine
8. Bone and bone marrow
What are the qualifications required for organ donation?\
1. Good health
2. Free from disease- no Hep B or C / HIV..or others
3. No abnormal liver, renal function test
4. Age -18-60
Just an eg; For those who have end stage renal failure( meaning BOTH kidney have failed) either they have to opt for haemodialysis or organ transplant. Haemodialysis means u have to be attached to a machine for at least 6 hours per session for at least 3 days per week, depending on ur situation, some even have to do it every day. They have virtually no quality no life, being bed bound and everything, not to add that it is very costly, requiring approximately Rm 8000 per month... If u r less fortunate, how can u receive these kind of traetment when u can hardly fend for ur family. I know the government do provide free treatment but because they r just too many ppl and not enough machine( it very expensive)..some just couldnt get their treatment..
So think of ur sick relatives, any uncles or aunties whose condition which couldn't be cured by medical or surgical treatment and only thru organ transplant, can they be saved.. Think about them, think to donate. ;D

First blog, first post- schizophrenia
This is my first time ever writing a blog. >.< haha. Someone ask me y the sudden interest about blogging, hmm thinking bout it, i have no idea as well, maybe, perhaps, as an alternative channel to express myself, my emotion, curiosities, joy, sorrow? But some how, i want to leave footsteps of those important moments in my life so that as i browse thru them in the future, i'll able to cherish them and declare life definitely has its ups and downs but on the other hand it can be indeed really amazing and awesome. Also, i wish to share about those wonderful people who have shared and touched a part of my life and share amazing stories with u guys =). So, ever heard of schizophrenia??
FYI, I'm currently a 3rd year medical student in UCSI, Malaysia. Psychiatry will only be taught in 4th year, so my knowledge bout this condition is as superficial as other layman. It just happpened that, last night, out of no where, an old secondary school mate just suddenly chatted me up in FB, she, I cant say i'm close with her in class, she was one of the top student and me, a mere "muggle" last time, seldom mix with her and she herself was from my perspective, quite reserved and "guai guai" so yea, we weren't close. Secondary sch ended and it was fate that we met again in my University, though different course so yea we didnt really catch up. Last night, she told she had quitted her course in UK given by JPA ( government scholarship). i was dumbstrucked. i was like " is she out of her mind, such waste" Until... she told me she was diagnosed with schizophrenia with depression. So,It wasnt her choice that she wanted to quit, it was because of her condition that forced her to quit. I'm really shocked because it just happened that an ex classmate of mine just quitted my medical course because of the same condition..
So a bit bout Schizophrenia as that u will know y they have to quit;
1.. The symptoms of schizophrenia may be divided into the following 4 domains:
a) Positive
symptoms: These include psychotic symptoms, such as hallucinations,
which are usually auditory; delusions; and disorganized speech and
behavior.
b) Negative symptoms: These include a
decrease in emotional range, poverty of speech, loss of interests, and
loss of drive. The person with schizophrenia has tremendous inertia.
c) Cognitive
symptoms: These include neurocognitive deficits, such as deficits in
working memory and attention and executive functions such as the ability
to organize and abstract. Patients also have difficulty understanding
nuances and subtleties of interpersonal cues and relationships. A new
initiative from the National Institutes of Mental Health, known as
Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia
(MATRICS), is a collaboration between various programs to develop tools
for measuring cognition in clinical trials and aiding drug development
that is targeted at these symptoms.
d) Mood
symptoms: Schizophrenia patients often seem cheerful or sad in a way
that does not make sense to others. They often are depressed.
Often, this condition starts in adolescent (applies both to my friends), positive family history( one of my fren, her parents both are schizo, as well as 2 of her siblings and 1 depressed sister..fyi, if boths parents are schizo, the chance of getting this disease is as high as 40%.. )...y so.. i searched for it and found out it's because of their abnormal brain formation..so, it runs in the family, also at the same time, environmental factors apply as well, because children of schizo parents tend to live in a very "expressive" environment..sooner of later they themselves will be affected by others' violent mood and behaviours. However, if u save tat kid from tat environment, he or she might have a higher chance of not getting it...
Both my friends, they were both very bright students before they got this condition, so if it's because of brain malformation, y does it strikes suddenly, y isnt it congenital (from birth)?? It happens tat both of my frens, before they got this condition, they were bombarded with tons of problems and because of ineffective stress management, it just suddenly develop..mainly, because their brain is structurally more prone to developing schizo..
I'm really sad for both of them.. it was like a total 180 degree change of their life.. one currently incapable of studying, another struggling.. they just could not cope with the stress which were considered normal or minor for us.. However both of them were grateful that they have passed through the worst for now...because of their hallucinations and abnormal aggressive behaviour, some people thought they were possessed or something.. so yea..
So, just the thought for the "night" we should really appreciate out current life, be it stressful because of an upcoming exam, endless homework, stressful work and colleagues or bad relationship or whatever.. compared to them... just the mere ability to study and do work and not needing to take medications everyday is a blessing .. so yea, i better stop here and sleep early and "enjoy" my study tomoro morning. Goodnight world . ;D
