Just finished a 3 hours lecture and today's topic is really interesting, so i wan to share with u guys out there regarding ORGAN TRANSPLANT
Here r some shocking local Malaysian statistics regarding organ donation in Msia.
-According to WHO 2010, there are only 0.6% per million ppl who donated organ. That means, if Msia has around 35 million population, every year only 17 chose to donate their organs to save other's ppl life! where are the rest??!!! , in fact Malaysian has one of the lowest donation rate in the world. This is truly shocking for me, for every hour, every minute, every second, there is a person(>1) who are dying and r in dire need to obtain an organ transplant to survive. Probably due to religious or cultural issues, malaysian r unwilling to donate their organ. However this is not an acceptable excuse, because millions of lives can be saved just by donating ur organ or ur blood. Y not choose to do a good deed after u r dead?? Oh ya if u still can not make any decision to donate ur organ yet, at least try to donate ur blood every 3 months, ( in this case, i dun mean the girls' monthly donation haha >.<) btw i just donated my blood few days ago =D
So if u wan to donate, wad organs can u choose to donate?
Okay first, there are 2 type of donation, living donor and cadaveric( after u die) donor
As a living donor, u can donate
1. Liver ( dun worry, just merely 30% of ur liver is sufficient to function as 1 and it can easily regenerate)
2. Kidney ( u just need 1 kidney to survive ;) , donate another one )
Cadaveric donor (anything except brain for now)
1. Heart
2. Lungs
3. Cornea
4. Limbs
5.Pancreas
6. Skin
7. Small intestine
8. Bone and bone marrow
What are the qualifications required for organ donation?\
1. Good health
2. Free from disease- no Hep B or C / HIV..or others
3. No abnormal liver, renal function test
4. Age -18-60
Just an eg; For those who have end stage renal failure( meaning BOTH kidney have failed) either they have to opt for haemodialysis or organ transplant. Haemodialysis means u have to be attached to a machine for at least 6 hours per session for at least 3 days per week, depending on ur situation, some even have to do it every day. They have virtually no quality no life, being bed bound and everything, not to add that it is very costly, requiring approximately Rm 8000 per month... If u r less fortunate, how can u receive these kind of traetment when u can hardly fend for ur family. I know the government do provide free treatment but because they r just too many ppl and not enough machine( it very expensive)..some just couldnt get their treatment..
So think of ur sick relatives, any uncles or aunties whose condition which couldn't be cured by medical or surgical treatment and only thru organ transplant, can they be saved.. Think about them, think to donate. ;D
